The Deutsch Drahthaar breed was
founded in 1902 in Germany. The dogs that are being bred in the VDD
system are direct descendants of the original breeding, selective
breeding and training.
The German breeders wanted a
dog that was capable, within a hunting experience, of tracking
wounded game (big & small), searching and pointing upland game, and
dispatching and recovery of wounded both on land and in water.
To get the Drahthaar line,
German breeders took "top of the line" breeding stock from four
major lines of that time (Stichelhaar, Griffon, Karzhaar (Shorthair)
and Pudel (Pointer). After years of breeding and culling with the
philosophy of breeding the "best to the best" and serious culling -
The Drahthaar was created.
Today the Deutsch has become
the #1 hunting dog in Germany both in numbers and performance. This
popularity is fast becoming known around the world and especially in
the United States.
